What makes the engine gimbal? on Kerbal Space Program

I just noticed that an engine with gimballing enabled will still gimbal despite having throttle at 0% and no electric charge in the ship at all.

So, what we can conclude then, is that gimballing is not driven by electric actuators or anything electrical at all, but by different means. What mystical force drives the gimbal, then?

I think it's safe to conclude that it's not:
1) Solar powered - Works despite not having researched solar panels yet.
2) Heat exchange powered - Works on Eeloo too.
3) Wind powered - Works in vacuum.

[Suggestion] The S3-KS-25x4 Engine Cluster Should Gimbal Roll. on Kerbal Space Program

I have been thinking about this for a while, and after reading the wiki, I found out that all of the engines in line with the roll axis (as they usually are) cannot gimbal in that direction. This is acceptable, as they are all single nozzle designs, unlike our friend the S3-KS-25x4 Engine Cluster (which shall be called "Henry" from now on, "S3-KS-25x4 Engine Cluster" is a mouthful.). Although I am unsure whether or not this is possible within the engine, I am fairly certain c...

Engine Gimbal Woes on Kerbal Space Program

I'm not sure where I've gone wrong here. When my engine gimbals, the nozzle (which is the parent of the thrustTransform and the gimbal object) and the effects seem to be moving from different origin points. I have them set to the same place in Blender, though I do notice in unity the Z transform location is different. They still visually appear to be in the same location. [Spoiler: Big images] Any advice would be appreciated. ...

WIP: Internal Combustion Engine Construction Kit - 77 Industries on Kerbal Space Program

Ever wanted to try and build a car or aircraft engine? Now you can. After months of tinkering I present you with a set of parts that has made the impossible possible, just by editing config files. Short video is uploading. This is impossible to build in stock. Even the mods that i've used, i've modded them to create parts that would be usable, rocket parts are just what they are ... rocket parts. List of mods: Procedural Parts, heavily modified Infernal Robotics, heavily modified Tal's Car...

[Request] Intake/Air-breathing engine reordering plugin on Kerbal Space Program

Allocating intakes to air-breathing engines in KSP is dependent on part placement order, which makes it a bit tedious to build efficiently as symmetry is trickier to use. My request is for a plugin that can take a completed craft and reorder the intakes and engines in the optimal order within the craft file, interleaving the intakes with the engines. This would allow construction by any method the player chooses without sacrificing intake efficiency. I believe StripSymmetry does some similar c...

[Discussion] Strategies - Makes KSP too easy? on Kerbal Space Program

Hi! I consider myself a "seasoned" KSP player, so with the upcome of the .25 update I was looking ahead to a more challenging gameplay. So I started a new career with "Hard" difficulty setting (Science Rewards -> 60%, Funds Rewards -> 60%). Since I recalled from my restart in .24 that Funds are not limiting, but Science is, I adopted the "Outsourced R&D" Strategy with 10% commitment which turns Funds income into Science: And boy, was I right! I had zer...

[Plugin] [0.25] Engine sound for stock Ion drive | v 0.1 (10/19/2014) on Kerbal Space Program

ClankerTech proudly presents you Engine sound for stock Ion drive Hello folks. This is your new favorite sound for your already favorite engine. This is simple configuration file powered by Module Manager plugin that adds sound to Squad's Ion engine. There is already mod made by kahlzun (please, check his mod also) that does the same thing but with one difference (beside different sound), this mod does not overwrite any stock files but depends on Module Manager plugin. [Unanswered] Engine Test Contract Not Completing on Kerbal Space Program

Doing the R-10 booster test contract and I'm having issues with it. It says to activate it through the staging. Now, I would assume this simply means pressing spacebar, correct? Yet this doesn't work. Once all my marks are green, I try the only means to activate via staging and that is pressing spacebar. I tried doing it with a detachment coupler so when pressing spacebar, it would separate the engine. Also, you can't actually activate a booster once its already activated, so... *shrugs* Edi...

Closing stuff makes KSP run faster on Kerbal Space Program

Just noticed something: Was launching a shuttle into orbit and it seemed to take longer than usual so I watched the mission clock to see how much slower, a second on the mission clock took about two seconds IRL I then closed the music I was listening too on you tube and also Skype and suddenly it was back to normal! Never noticed this before but this might be why I'v been having lag issues! ...

[Games] Space Engine on Kerbal Space Program

Anybody hear or play this game yet? Quote: SpaceEngine: a free space simulation program that lets you explore the universe in three dimensions, from planet Earth to the most distant galaxies. Areas of the known universe are represented using actual astronomical data, while regions uncharted by astronomy are generated procedurally. Millions of galaxies, trillions of stars, countless planets - all available for exploration. You can land any planet, moon or asteroid and watch alien la...

[Discussion] Rocket engine ISP as thrust. on Kerbal Space Program

Currently, Kerbal rocket engines automatically vary their fuel flow to keep their thrust constant as atmospheric pressure changes, making the most use of their exhaust nozzles, and they are all most fuel efficient in a vacuum to a greater (LV909) or lesser (Mainsail) degree, but Human rocket engines don't do this. Our engines keep a constant fuel flow (depending on throttle of course) and, depending on atmospheric pressure and engine nozzle design, can be tuned to be most efficient at sea leve...

[Support] Can't get I one engine sounds mod to work. on Kerbal Space Program

So I've downloaded a number of small mods and the only one not working is one that is mean to add ion engine sounds. I checked in the part files and I'm fairly confident of the new ionEngine.cfg and the actual sound files themselves, but I don't know where to actually put them. The mod made a "part" file inside the ion engine file and put them there, but that clearly isn't working (in .25 at least) nor is it what other engines apparently do. So where do I put them? ...

[Suggestion] Xenon Tanks & new accompanying Ion Engine on Kerbal Space Program

So far, there are only two "Xenon Tanks", and only one "Ion Engine". I suggest there being a small spherical xenon tank similar to the "Stratus-V Roundified Monopropellant Tank" and a radial size "small" tank as opposed to only tiny. Accompanying the radial size "small" xenon tank, I suggest there being an Ion Engine similar to the H.i.P.E.P (new potentially "small" sized engine) compared to the N.E.X.T-like PB-Ion Electric Propulsion...

[Unanswered] What is it with multi-engine planes!? on Kerbal Space Program

I don't know what it is! I just can't do it! I swear I've gotten them to work in the past (using FAR or NEAR), but I seem to have lost that ability. I can get single engine planes to work just fine, I would even say they're amazing. But I just can't do multi engine! They just do that horrible swerve dance on the runway and proceed to explode at the cost of many innocent lives. What am I doing wrong? Could it be that the COL is too far back? The more I think about it the more that makes sense....

[Request] Aerojet M-1 engine. on Kerbal Space Program

A while back, someone made a Rocketdyne F-1 engine for KSP. For a long time that was the most powerful rocket engine ever built. IIRC it's still the most powerful single chamber engine actually used on a rocket. But back in the 1960's an even larger engine was on the drawing boards and prototype pieces were being built for the Aerojet M-1, designed to be run at 1.2 to 2 million pounds thrust. The turbopumps alone produced 75,000 and 27,000 horsepower for the hydrogen and oxygen, respectively. T...
