Configure Splunk to index its own .conf files

How can I configure Splunk to index its own conf files? Would there be any issues with doing this? Or does Splunk already index those files, and if so, then where are they indexed?...

Automatically extract domain from URL from with conf files at search time.

I have CSV inputs that include a URL field. I would like to extract the top level domain from that URL, and perform a passive reverse DNS lookup to obtain the IP address. Can this be accomplished from the conf files at search time?...

Edited inputs.conf file, where can I find the log files or can I bring up the results through command line

Hi, I am using Splunk on Ubuntu and edited the inputs.conf file to look at an IP address which I hope is working. I want to look in the log file to test if its working but I am unable to locate which log files it would be located in. Also if someone could post part of their inputs.conf file just so I can make sure I am inputting the stanza correctly that would be amazing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks....

inputs.conf files starting and ending with different patterns

I'm sure I'm missing something, but is there any way to get an input stanza equivalent to unix ls /opt/logs/connectors/{app1-*,*-service}.log /opt/logs/connectors/foo-service.log /opt/logs/connectors/bar-service.log /opt/logs/connectors/app1-foo.log /opt/logs/connectors/app1-bar.log ...

Where do you configure the location of log files? Is it inputs.conf on the forwarder?

Hi, I am brand new to Splunk. I've read up on what I can in the past few days and need some help clarifying some things. Our old splunk admin left the company and I've been asked to help with Splunk while we are replacing her. Where do I configure log source? My unix admin tells me they installed the forwarders correctly - which is fine since I can see the syslogs from the server but they want extra application logs to mimic the setup of another server (I didn't set that up). It sounds li...

Is it possible to use Quicklook (you know... the thing where you hit the spacebar in Finder) to look at the contents of .conf files without needing to open them in an editor like VI or TextEdit?...

Why is our Windows Server 2008 R2 Indexer crashing when trying to edit conf files after upgrading to Splunk 6.2.3?

Windows Server 2008 R2 VM, originally running Splunk 6.1.3 (Indexer and search head) for around 3 months without any issue. I upgraded to 6.2.3 and now I get blue screens (win32k.sys, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, STOP: 0x00000050) whenever I open Wordpad to edit one of the Splunk conf files. I found the following two MS technet articles and potential patches that sound plausible, but wanted to see if anyone else has seen anything like this? Apparently I don't have enough karma points to post l...

How do I configure inputs.conf to define sourcetypes for multiple types of log files in the same folder?

Hello, I have a question about indexing multiple types of logs file in same folder.
