An observation about relativistic space travel...

I suppose I am not the first to notice this, but if you are going at say, 0.999c you will have shrunk by a factor of about 20 and everything else on the craft.

Suppose the spacecraft is 2000 meters long, at 0.999c it will shrink to about 100 meters long.

So suppose a person 2 meters tall, 2000...

If you could travel in space forever without dying where would you go?

By this I mean, if you could literally start flying tomorrow with your own arms and you had to go to space, where would you head first? Somewhere in our galaxy, distant other galaxies, specific planets? Anything you guys can think of. (Yes, you can go on any planet, even if it's gas) Let's say you can travel max speed of 10,000 km/h. You also cannot die of hunger, thirst, lack of sleep anything, you just keep on going and going. I think I'd first go check out Pluto, just cause, then make m...

Special relativity question: space travel and relativity of time

1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data You are 20 years old and embark on a mission to a star system that is 200 light-years away. Your ship leaves Earth in 2013 and travels at 0.999c. You do not spend much time at the destination, just head back to Earth. What year is... Virgin Galactic's commercial space travel crashed during test flight

LOS ANGELES: Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo craft suffered an "anomaly" during a test flight over California on Friday (Oct 31), the commercial space flight operator announced on its Twitter feed. The craft, which is still in its test phase and which normally carries two pilots, had been carried aloft on a bigger aircraft known as WhiteKnightTwo and then released for a test of its rocket engine. The fate of the crew was not immediately known. "SpaceShipTwo has experienced an in...

Travel space bags

Has anyone used these for packing before? We will be in NY for a week before hitting Florida and will only need our big jackets for that period. I want to space bag the coats so they don't take up too much space. We have just about filled a whole suitcase with winter clothes! There is some cheap travel bags on ebay but I'm not sure if I should spend the extra to get the brand name ones. Any reviews? ...

Interesting Observation: Only Space Gray iPhones bent?

I've yet to see a single reported instance on this forum of an iPhone 6 with a WHITE front bending - It is only the space gray iPhone bending! Could it be the durability of the material used? I'm assuming the gray is a basic aluminum, and I'd assume silver and gold are less malleable materials ...

[Physics] Reverse Time Dilation for interstellar travel on Kerbal Space Program

Hey, in January I was writing for a project, when I realized all futuristic spaceships go long distances almost always the same way. They either warp the fabric of the universe, speed up a ton(in the looser sci-fi like Star Wars), or go through a wormhole of some sort. I wanted to be original. Well, I realized I remembered seeing something about a relationship between time and speed, like when you go close to light speed you appear to be moving "slow" to everyone else. I looked aro...

[Wild Talents/Traveller] What changes in the OTU if I shorten space travel?

(I posted this over on the CoTI forums, but I wanted to get you folks' input as well). So, I've got an upcoming game, and I plan on using the Traveller Imperium (and the Zhodani, and the Sword Worlds, and other such), but I want to give it more of a Guardians of the Galaxy feel. I'm using a non-Traveller ruleset (Wild Talents for what it's worth) because I want psionics and weird aliens and cybernetics or wacky sorts and all that. In any case, one conceit I'm thinking on is to make ships faste...

Easy planets to travel to AND return? on Kerbal Space Program

I've had this game since may and played the demo 1.5 years ago and just recently started watching Scott Manley tutorials. I've traveled to the Mun and Minmus a few times and returned each time. I also have a docking station in orbit around Kerbal at like 120km. So now I'm wondering which planets are easiest to travel to and return besides the Mun and Minmus. ...

Relativistic Effects On International Space Station (ISS)

On the ISS, special relativity dictates the station's clocks run slower than clocks on Earth because of the high velocity, but general relativity dictates that the station's clocks run faster than clocks on Earth because of the lesser gravity. Which effect is predominant, and do the station's... Relativistic Effects On International Space Station (ISS)...

challenge: interstellar travel on Kerbal Space Program

so everyone knows about the star systems mod by now right?, well heres my challenge, in that mod take some krags planet factory planets or something and put them around the other stars, then i challenge you, to build a ship that will get you to both stars, onto at least 1 planet in each system, with only 2 detachable (and redockable) components, and ALL STOCK MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, not only that but you have to return back to kerbin with at least a 2 part chunk of ship remaining(hello, scott m...

[MtSC/MtAsc] Confused on Horizon Realms, Space Travel and Aliens

Okay. I've been looking over the old World of Darkness settings of Mage The Ascension and Mage The Sorcerer's Crusade and I still cannot seem to grasp the idea of Horizon Realms, how the Mages did Space Travel and what not. Could somebody please help me here? If I understand everything correctly, Horizon realms are artificial creations that are outside of Earth's influence? So are they in some other dimension or are they floating out in space somewhere? Also, the idea of space travel in the ...

A silly observation about decoupler test contracts on Kerbal Space Program

I had two "test decoupler at launch" contracts. These normally are money-losers: you get about 100-200 roots reward but the parts cost 400-600. So I put a pod on both ends of the stack decoupler, and pulled the trigger. One side I recovered just the pod. The other, I recovered both the pod and the decoupler. Works with a radial decoupler too, though I needed a surface-attach part for that. I attached an SRB to the radial decoupler, and a pod to the SRB (under it, and put Jeb in i...
